7-Eleven drops alcohol
IN a surprise move, it was learnt that all 7-Eleven convenience stores in Selangor had been ordered by its parent company, 7-Eleven Malaysia Sdn Bhd, to remove all beer and other beverages containing alcohol from sales display.
It could not be ascertained why this order was given late yesterday evening, but checks by Malay Mail at several of these stores in Petaling Jaya — even in non-Muslim majority and predominantly commercial areas — found staff there packing away alcoholic beverages.
“We received a notice a short while ago from our headquarters to stop selling alcohol drinks,” said Mohd Kasim, 25, who works at the Taman Sea Park 7-Eleven outlet. “We have removed the drinks as soon as we got the notice.”
He speculated that it could be due to the current holy month of Ramadan.
Earlier this month, controversy broke out when Selangor exco member and State Pas chief Datuk Hassan Ali, called on the State government to impose a blanket ban on the sale of alcohol by 24-hour convenience stores and retail outlets in Muslim majority areas.
Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim later intervened by deciding that convenience stores could self-regulate where it came to such sales.
